Where is Consciousness in Your Brain?

What is the study about:

Ever wondered how your brain makes you a conscious being? Ever wondered how your brain generates the subjective conscious experience of tasting a morning coffee, enjoying the view of Frankfurt Skyline, or immersed in your favourite music? Join us in an innovative neuroscience study at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics to help us find it out! We are looking for volunteers to participate in an MEG brain imaging study that explores how we perceive and process various types of visual experience.

Duration:

The study consists of two parts:
(1) an MEG measurement (Magnetoencephalography),
(2) an MRI scan (magnetic resonance imaging),
which all take place at the Collaborative Brain Imaging Center (CoBIC) in Niederrad.
MEG and MRI are non-invasive methods.

The duration of the appointment in the MEG will be about 3,5 to 4 hours, of which the actual measurement takes about 120 minutes. The second appointment in the MRI takes about half an hour.
It is important that participants attend both sessions, because only then can we use the data.
However, if you have already had an MRI with us, we can reuse it from the previous study if you give us your consent. In this case, the second session is omitted.

Compensation:

You will receive a compensation of €10 for each half hour or part thereof. So in total about 70€-90€. This will be paid to you after the last appointment.

Participation requirements:

- Between 18 and 50 years old
- proficient in both German and English
- Intact vision (e.g. corrected with contact lenses. If you exclusively wear glasses, you unfortunately cannot take part in the study)
- Right-handed
- No neurological or psychiatric disorders (e.g. migraine with aura, epilepsy, depression)
- No dyslexia or speech disorders
- No non-removable metal on/in the body, e.g. retainers (i.e. metal wire behind the teeth), tattoos, pacemakers, contraceptive coils, defibrillators, metal plates, screws, permanent make-up etc.
- No implants or prostheses (e.g. shunts, stents, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, artificial joints)
- There are no metal splinters in your body, such as metal filings (e.g. from the metalworking industry) or shrapnel (e.g. from the war)
- No claustrophobia
- For women: there should be no pregnancy
